What
is a Quantum Corral?
(and why would we name our company
like that?)
We
grew up in the “Atomic Age” where atoms were these
infinitesimally tiny marvels that would give us “electricity
too cheap to measure”,
send rockets to the moon, enable limitless interplanetary
travel, and blow our sworn enemies to bits.
From “atoms
for peace” to
“duck and cover”, atoms ensconced themselves within
the subconscious of our young, impressionable,
scientifically curious minds.
The
prevailing notion was that atoms could never be
seen, and we could only
know them indirectly, by speculation, or through analogies.
Fast forward to the
1990s when, after years of keeping our right brain fit
through regular creative activity, our left brain was
suddenly engaged by an article in Science
News that described
how scientists at IBM’s
Almaden Research Center had not only managed to observe
atoms, but had placed a single one within a structure
they named a quantum
corral.
To a former Hopalong
Cassidy fan and amateur scientist, the
expression proved irresistible. The pairing of both
words stirred memories of imagined adventures both
on the saddle and at the Chemcraft
Chemistry Set.
The notion that you
could round up a single atomic particle seemed like a
terrific metaphor for the ability to home in on the essential
concept or idea
that
brings a particular project to life.
